What this bond does

Section 12.24.050 of the city's 2025 street-cut ordinance requires a bond, with surety approved by the City Engineer, guaranteeing restoration of the place where the permitted work is done, including affected underground facilities.

Who needs it
The permittee responsible for covered work in Columbus streets, alleys or public rights of way, subject to the ordinance's exceptions and accepted alternatives.
Who it protects
The bond is provided to the City of Columbus for the specified restoration obligation. Liability insurance is a separate permit requirement, and the bond does not itself authorize a lane, sidewalk or street closure.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Use the disturbance description to establish the required sum

The ordinance's bond schedule distinguishes road class, crossing or parallel work, excavation area and poles or handholes. It also allows Engineering-specified blanket bonds for permittees submitting five or more applications a year. Obtain the department's amount rather than choosing a standard limit from the product name.

Keep the permit period separate from restoration responsibilities. The ordinance discusses 90-day permits and three-year repair/warranty and inspection provisions. Those do not justify guessing the provider's term or an automatic release date. After issuance, execute and furnish the bond under Engineering's current instructions and follow the separate permit and restoration process.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Have the ROW excavation permit reference and the legal permittee details.
  2. Describe the road, disturbance area, crossing or parallel work and any affected underground facilities.
  3. Obtain Engineering's required sum, accepted form and any blanket-bond direction.
  4. Keep separate liability insurance, closure permission and restoration inspection instructions available.

Questions about this bond

Can a frequent permit applicant use a blanket bond?

The ordinance allows blanket bonds from permittees submitting five or more applications per year, at an amount specified by Engineering. That does not establish eligibility or the sum for a particular applicant without the department's direction.

Does the bond application replace the OpenGov permit?

No. Columbus directs excavation permit applications through OpenGov and has separate special-use approval where work restricts lanes, alleys, sidewalks or parking. The surety application does not complete either city process.

Where do I apply for the bond?

Select Purchase Now to open Propeller in a new tab. Check the permittee, City of Columbus recipient, form and Engineering-assigned amount. Issuance, execution and city acceptance follow separately; applying is not permission to excavate.
