Santa Clarita, CA — Grading Permit Bond

Santa Clarita's published grading-security chapter concerns hazards from unfinished grading and completion of approved work. The City Engineer determines security requirements; this is not automatically a fixed bond for every grading job.

What this bond does

The published section 17.84.010 describes security for mitigating flood/geotechnical hazards created if grading is unfinished and for work needed to bring the property into code compliance. It can include incidental grading on contiguous off-site property when that owner's written consent is filed with the City Engineer.

Who needs it
The permittee or property owner whom the City Engineer requires to provide security. The published chapter allows security requirements for grading over 1,000 cubic yards and, for unusual conditions/special hazards, smaller work; it also describes discretionary waivers. Get the actual project determination rather than assuming either a universal mandate or a small-job exemption.
Who it protects
The chapter permits a California-authorized corporate surety bond and other security with prior written Engineer approval, and allows a cash portion for safeguards. Its valuation considers the greater excavation/fill volume and drainage, protective and hazard-removal work estimated by the Engineer. A bond does not automatically replace every separate cash requirement, and these rules do not describe a general contractor license or liability policy.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Filing starts the security; Engineer approval determines completion

The published term begins on filing with the City Engineer and continues until the permit work is completed and approved by that Engineer. Finishing rough grading or reaching a checkout anniversary is not the stated end condition.

After conforming rough grading, the Engineer may consent to a proportionate reduction while retaining enough for remaining grading, development or planting. That is discretionary—not an automatic percentage or release. Confirm the current accepted undertaking, sum and project instructions.

Have these ready

  1. Have the Santa Clarita grading permit, approved plans and actual Engineer security determination.
  2. Identify the required permittee/owner principal, precise recipient/form and any contiguous-owner consent.
  3. Obtain the Engineer's required sum, accepted security/issuer, cash-portion instructions and dates.
  4. Prepare authorized execution/filing and written completion, reduction and release directions.

Questions about this bond

Does a job under 1,000 cubic yards automatically avoid security?

The published chapter allows the Engineer to require it for unusual conditions or special hazards below that volume. Obtain the actual project decision and current instructions.

Is rough-grading completion an automatic bond release?

No. The published chapter describes discretionary reductions after conforming rough grading, while its term runs until permit work is completed and Engineer-approved.

How do I apply for the grading bond?
