What this bond does

The bond is part of Tennessee's requirements for taking up notarial duties. Purchasing it does not replace election, commissioning, or the oath of office.

Who needs it
First-time and renewing Tennessee notary applicants working through the county where they reside or maintain their principal place of business at election.
Who it protects
The bond is security for official notary duties, payable to the State of Tennessee. It should not be treated as personal errors and omissions insurance for the notary.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Start with the County Clerk

The Secretary of State directs applicants to obtain and submit an application through the County Clerk. The county legislative body elects the applicant; the state then issues the commission through the county process.

After securing the bond, provide proof to the County Clerk. UT County Technical Assistance Service states that a notary must post bond after election and before commencing duties. Ask your own clerk about the oath, delivery of the commission, and local filing arrangements.

Use the commission dates for the bond

Shelby County's official application instructs approved applicants to obtain a $10,000 surety bond payable to the State of Tennessee for four years beginning on the Governor's commission issuance date. UT CTAS separately confirms the four-year commission period and says renewal follows the original procedure.

Check the $10,000 bond amount and the commission's start and end dates in the provider's application. These dates matter when you present bond proof to the County Clerk.

Renew the commission as well as the bond

UT CTAS describes renewal by the same method as the original election and commissioning process. A bond purchase alone does not extend an expiring commission.

If you are renewing, give the clerk your current expiration date and ask when to begin the local process. Match the next bond to the next commission rather than carrying forward an old date from an earlier application.

Have your commission information ready

Continue through Purchase Now to RLI's application in a new tab. Use the name intended for your commission and confirm the elected county and commission dates before completing the provider's process.

Check the resulting documents with your County Clerk's instructions. Provider approval and document delivery are separate from the county's acceptance and the state's commissioning work; this page does not promise a completion date.

Questions about this bond

Do I file directly with the Secretary of State?

The Secretary of State's guide tells applicants to submit the application and proof of bond to the County Clerk. The documents proceed to the state through that process, and the commission returns to the clerk.

Does buying the bond let me notarize immediately?

No. Bonding is part of the commissioning process. UT CTAS says bond must be posted before duties begin and describes delivery of the commission after the oath and bond requirements are completed.

How should I date a renewal bond?

Match the bond to the next commission's dates. Renewal follows the election and commissioning process again; a bond purchase does not extend the old commission.

Does this listing include E&O insurance?

Review the provider's terms for any E&O coverage details.
