What this bond does
Utah Code § 58-55-306 addresses financial responsibility for contractor applicants and licensees. It provides for a questionnaire or a bond in an amount and form determined by the commission with the director’s concurrence. DOPL’s contractor application warns that a bond may be required before a license is issued.
- Who needs it
- A Utah general contractor applicant or licensee responding to a financial-responsibility bond request. Do not assume every contractor or license classification has the same bond requirement.
- Who it protects
- The financial-responsibility obligation is the focus. The required form defines the protected interests and conditions; this licensing bond is separate from a project’s performance or payment bond and from general liability insurance.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Questions about this bond
Does every Utah general contractor need the same license bond?
No uniform requirement should be assumed. Section 58-55-306 and DOPL’s application describe a financial-responsibility review in which a bond may be required. Follow the decision for your applicant.
Can I choose an amount based only on my classification?
Use the amount and form specified through your licensing review. Classification helps identify the license, but it does not by itself establish this applicant’s security amount.
Does this replace a construction performance bond?
No. This option concerns contractor licensing and financial responsibility. A project owner’s performance or payment bond request concerns a separate contract obligation.
Will starting the bond application activate my license?
The licensing decision remains with DOPL. Submit the issued bond as instructed and complete the other outstanding licensing requirements.
