What this bond does

Under section 139-18, the excavation license applicant files security with the Engineering Division on the town's form. Street restoration and correction of later defects are part of the excavation rules; specified repair costs may be charged to the excavator's surety bond.

Who needs it
The contractor applying for a license to excavate in Wethersfield town streets. The code's street definition includes sidewalks and driveway aprons.
Who it protects
The town receives the security for the applicable excavation obligation. Required insurance, the contractor license and each excavation permit remain separate; this is not general liability coverage or a universal bond for private earthwork.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Distinguish the license bond from the permit clock

The code calls for a bond of at least $10,000 before the license is granted, using the town's form and an approved instrument. It separately describes 30-day permits. Do not assume that the permit's duration is the bond term or that an expired permit releases the security.

The restoration provisions address defects appearing within two years after surface restoration, require repair within 12 hours, and permit expedited town repairs in an emergency. Keep these duties in mind when arranging the bond and retaining project records. After issuance, complete the required execution and file the bond with Engineering under the current instructions.

Have these ready

  1. Match the principal's legal name to the excavation contractor license applicant.
  2. Obtain the Engineering Division's bond form, required sum and effective dates.
  3. Have the excavation location, approximate dimensions/depth and CALL BEFORE YOU DIG reference for the separate permit.
  4. Keep insurance certificates and street-restoration instructions separate from the surety application.

Questions about this bond

Is the $10,000 amount fixed for every applicant?

The code states not less than $10,000. Use Engineering's actual request and town-provided form; do not infer that the minimum is sufficient for every situation.

Can the contractor license be transferred to another business?

The excavation code says licenses are not transferable. Make sure the applicant's identity is correct rather than relying on another contractor's license or security.

What does Purchase Now do?

It opens Propeller in a new tab to begin the application. Check the principal, town recipient, accepted form and sum. Issuance and filing come separately, and the town must still grant the license and excavation permit.
