California — Contractor's License Bond

California's Contractors State License Board requires a $25,000 contractor's bond before it can issue an active license, reactivate an inactive license or renew an active license. Choose the existing one-, two- or three-year RLI option, then select Purchase Now for that term.

Also known as California Contractor Bonds; California Contractor's License Bond (1 Year); California Contractor's License Bond (2 Year)

3 options on record. Choose the one that matches your requirement, then purchase.

What this bond does

This is the standard CSLB contractor's bond for the licensed business. A qualifying-individual bond or disciplinary bond is a separate requirement when applicable.

Who needs it
Contractor businesses preparing the standard bond for active California licensing, reactivation or active renewal.
Who it protects
CSLB identifies consumers harmed by defective construction or other license-law violations and employees owed unpaid wages as beneficiaries. This licensing security does not replace liability insurance or a project's separate performance/payment bonds.

Choose from 3 options

Each option is a separate record. Where a term, bond amount, premium, or E&O limit is known, it is listed; match it to what your requirement asks for.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Match CSLB's business record exactly

CSLB says the bond's business name and license number must match its records exactly. Keep the licensed business identity distinct from the name of a qualifying individual.

The board also calls for a California-licensed surety, the surety attorney-in-fact's signature and a form approved by the Attorney General's Office.

Choose a purchase term without treating it as license approval

The existing RLI choices are labeled one year, two years and three years. Use the link for your intended term and check the issued effective period; the term choice does not itself issue or renew a CSLB license.

CSLB says the bond must reach its Headquarters Office within 90 days of its effective date. Confirm the filing arrangements after issuance rather than assuming a checkout receipt means the board has received it.

Questions about this bond

Does a longer purchase term change the required bond amount?

CSLB specifies a $25,000 standard contractor's bond. The one-, two- and three-year labels on this page are purchase-term choices, not different CSLB license classes.

Does this replace a bond of qualifying individual or disciplinary bond?

No. CSLB describes qualifying-individual requirements separately, and a disciplinary bond cannot replace or be combined with other required bonds.

When is filing complete?

Issuance alone is not confirmation of CSLB receipt. The board says the bond must be received at its Headquarters Office within 90 days of the effective date; confirm that filing step.
