What this bond does

The statutory condition concerns payment of the Chapter 90A tax and penalties. It is not a general guarantee of fighter purses, venue contracts or every debt associated with the show.

Who needs it
Promoters of professional boxing or wrestling and MMA matches covered by Iowa's athletics law. Chapter 90A's MMA definition includes qualifying professional and amateur events; confirm the applicable request if you are arranging amateur boxing instead.
Who it protects
The security protects the State's tax interest. The state commissioner of athletics is the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing director or designee. Event licensing, required participant insurance and the promoter's other responsibilities remain separate.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Details of Iowa's tax-and-penalty bond

Section 90A.2 requires $5,000 security payable to the State and conditioned on tax and penalty payment. Current rule 250.5 requires the bond with the event application unless a current valid bond is already on file with the Department. Ask the Commission to confirm that an existing instrument qualifies; do not assume each new event always needs a second bond.

The 2026 rules distinguish professional wrestling from other covered events. They specify a seven-day application lead time for professional wrestling and a sixty-day application/advance-notice process for other events. The statute's seven-day application floor should not be used as the only deadline for a boxing or MMA show. Obtain the current filing calendar before planning submission.

The law and current rules require the promoter's post-event report and tax payment within twenty days. Keep ticket counts, gate receipts and the related documentation. Section 90A.9 provides for State recovery under the bond following specified defaults; the security is not a replacement for filing an accurate report and paying what is due.

Questions about this bond

Does this bond guarantee the contestants' purses?

The condition stated in Section 90A.2 is payment of the Chapter 90A tax and penalties. Do not treat that tax security as a general purse-payment or venue-contract guarantee.

Must I buy a new bond for every event?

Current rule 250.5 provides an exception when the promoter already has a current valid bond on file with the Department. Confirm that status and acceptance for the new event before completing another application.

Can I wait until seven days before a boxing or MMA event?

Do not rely on that as the whole schedule. The current rules require the non-wrestling application and advance-notice process sixty days ahead, while professional wrestling has different timing. Confirm all applicable filing stages with the Commission.
