Oregon — Private Investigator Bond

Oregon DPSST accepts a surety bond, irrevocable letter of credit or errors-and-omissions insurance of at least $5,000 for its investigator financial-security requirement. The current checklist asks for your own name as principal. The Southern Agency’s listing is the surety route for that individual licence, not a substitute business name or guard-company credential.

What this bond does

DPSST’s currently linked form runs to the State of Oregon for the stated State/interested-person benefit. It addresses amounts DPSST orders for negligent or improper investigative work or breach of contract and includes the specified protection against unauthorized disclosure of personal information obtained under the cited motor-record provisions.

Who needs it
The private-investigator or provisional-investigator applicant choosing the surety path. DPSST publishes different experience requirements for those licence types and separate PI-11 upgrade instructions; arranging financial security does not establish qualifying experience or examination approval.
Who it protects
The form specifies protection for people damaged by the principal’s nonperformance or negligence in the described obligations. Client claims are determined by DPSST under its process and must concern a precipitating event during the effective period. This is not an automatic refund for every dissatisfied client or a guarantee that an investigation produces the desired result.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Match the investigator and the licence path

The new private-investigator checklist asks for proof of 1,500 experience hours, with possible educational substitution. The provisional checklist does not impose that same experience submission. Both list the financial-security alternatives, references, identification/background materials, and ethics requirements; DPSST sends examination information after processing the complete application.

An upgrade uses PI-11 and does not extend the existing expiry date. DPSST tells an applicant close to expiry to submit renewal with the upgrade. A bond purchase alone neither upgrades a provisional credential nor renews the licence.

Check the signature date and conditional start

The form’s checklist says the face date is the date the surety signed. Its effective clause separately starts when the principal meets the licensing/renewal requirements. It also requires filing with DPSST within sixty days of the face date for licensing validity. Do not treat checkout or a signed PDF as automatic authority to investigate.

Complete the principal and surety names, bond number, and both amount fields, and obtain the required principal/surety signatures. The currently linked form calls for the completed original; follow DPSST’s current delivery instructions so it arrives within the stated period.

Use the continuing form and existing route

The form continues until depleted by claims unless cancelled sooner. Surety cancellation requires thirty days’ written notice to the principal and DPSST and does not release responsibility for final orders relating to work under contracts entered before cancellation. This is not a supplied thirty-day purchase term or immediate release of earlier work.

Purchase Now opens RLI in a new tab. Compare your personal principal name, State recipient, requested amount of at least $5,000, accepted form, and actual dates before completing the application. The public option has no term label.

For renewal, the current PI-21 packet accepts current surety, qualifying irrevocable letter of credit or E&O evidence and separate continuing-education/ethics materials. It says an expired licence does not permit investigative work while renewal is pending. Keep the accepted financial security and licence current.

Have these ready

  1. Individual private-investigator or provisional path and actual name, not only the investigative business’s trade name.
  2. Chosen financial-security method and accepted amount of at least $5,000.
  3. Complete original, bond number, matching amount fields, signatures and delivery within sixty days of the surety-signing face date.
  4. Separate experience where applicable, references/background, ethics/exam and current renewal/continuing-education file.

Questions about this bond

Must I buy a surety bond if I already have qualifying E&O?

Not automatically. Current DPSST new and renewal instructions accept specified E&O insurance or an irrevocable letter of credit as alternatives to surety security, with at least $5,000 required. Confirm the accepted evidence for your individual licence rather than purchasing a duplicate by assumption.

Does provisional-to-full upgrade extend my existing expiry date?

DPSST says it does not. Use PI-11, and if close to expiry submit the renewal application with the upgrade as instructed. Financial security does not itself grant either approval.

Can I start work as soon as the provider issues a document?

No automatic licensing permission follows from issuance. The form ties effectiveness to meeting licensing requirements and timely filing; DPSST controls the actual licence. The current renewal packet also says you cannot work after expiry until renewed.
