Portage County, OH — Contractor's License Bond

Portage County requires its signed $10,000 contractor bond for registration. Check the work jurisdiction first: its Building Department serves the County's townships and villages and directs work in Kent, Ravenna, Streetsboro and Aurora to those cities.

What this bond does

Support the contractor company's registration with the Portage County Building Department, not a separate city registration or procurement bond.

Who needs it
Contractor companies working within the County department's service area, including first-time registrants checking its late-year rule.
Who it protects
The prescribed form names Portage County and its citizenry and addresses workmanlike work, faithful duties and compliance with County laws applicable to the license or permit. The registration instructions call it a Performance Bond; that wording does not make it a separate project payment bond.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Check service area and the first-time November rule

Use the County form with the contractor company's exact name. Its ordinary registration instructions request December 31 expiration for the year of registration. First-time registrations starting November 1 may remain active through December 31 of the following year only if the bond expires on that following-year date. Do not apply that exception automatically to every renewal.

The County directs applicants to upload documents into OpenGov. First-time applicants must complete and notarize the separate contractor application before uploading it. Liability evidence names the County certificate holder; applicable State credentials, including the specified Fire Marshal certificates, remain separate.

Purchase Now opens RLI in a new tab. Match the County form, company, $10,000 and confirmed expiration. After issuance, check the principal signature and upload the bond with the registration documents. Calendar registration does not replace the instrument's own release/cancellation terms; its thirty-day mailed notice provision and same-bond liability limit remain distinct from registration approval.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Before application: confirm County service area rather than one of the separately served cities.
  2. For application: match the contractor company and applicable registration year.
  3. For a first-time November registration: confirm following-year expiration and complete the notarized application.
  4. After issuance: check the principal signature and upload the bond with separate registration evidence.

Questions about this bond

Does County registration cover work within Ravenna City?

The County Building Department directs Ravenna and the other named cities to their own municipal offices. Confirm the authority for the work address.

Does every November renewal receive the following year?

The published exception specifies first-time registration starting November 1 and requires the bond to expire December 31 of the following year. Do not extend it to all renewals.

Does the notarized application replace signing the bond?

No. The first-time application has its own notary requirement; the County instructions and bond separately require the principal's bond signature.
