What this bond does

Secures the permittee's public-way performance obligations to Salt Lake City under the permits and the city code provisions identified in its bond.

Who needs it
Contractors and other eligible permit applicants arranging excavation or construction within Salt Lake City's public way.
Who it protects
The city's bond addresses the permit obligations, including permitted work and the applicable warranty. It does not give unrelated parties a right of action or replace required liability insurance.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Use the city form, not a general license bond

The March 2026 city packet specifies $15,000 and requires Salt Lake City's own form. Confirm that the location is inside Salt Lake City; a Salt Lake County address can instead belong to another municipality.

The standard bond is continuous and can cover multiple permits, with aggregate surety liability limited by the form. The packet allows a one-address or one-permit limitation through Exhibit A. Have any proposed limitation checked before issuance.

Continuous coverage and the work warranty are different

The packet measures the three-year permit warranty from work acceptance by the city's Engineering Inspector, not from the purchase date. Completion in the field is not the same as documented city acceptance.

The bond allows surety withdrawal on 30 days' prior written notice, effective after city receipt as stated in the form. Obligations for projects commenced before termination and their applicable warranty period survive. Cancellation is not a way to discard existing work obligations.

File documents before starting the permit process

The city's instructions call for bond and insurance approval, matching company names across the contractor license, bond and insurance, then a public-way permit application. Prepare the work location, scope, plans and other applicable department approvals.

Purchase Now opens the existing Propeller application in a new tab. After issuance, submit the city-form bond and required insurance through Engineering's instructions. Obtain the issued permit and contact its assigned inspector 24 hours before starting; buying the bond does not authorize work.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Confirm the site is in Salt Lake City and identify the permittee's exact licensed business name.
  2. Prepare the city's $15,000 form and any proposed Exhibit A limitation.
  3. Arrange the separate insurance documents, site plans and applicable traffic or utility approvals.
  4. Check issued-bond filing, permit issuance and the inspector's acceptance record for warranty timing.

Questions about this bond

Can one bond cover more than one Salt Lake City permit?

The city's standard form is continuous and covers multiple permits subject to its aggregate limit. A one-address or one-permit restriction may be recorded through Exhibit A; confirm the intended scope with Engineering and the provider.

When does the three-year warranty start?

The city's packet measures it from acceptance of the work by its Engineering Inspector. Do not substitute the bond purchase date or your own completion date.

Will a generic contractor-license bond work?

Salt Lake City expressly requires its own public-way bond form. Check that the provider issues that form for the correct legal permittee and any accepted limitation.

What happens after provider issuance?

Submit the bond with the required insurance for city approval and complete the separate permit application. Work requires the issued permit and advance inspector notice.
