What this bond does

The street-excavation form binds the principal and surety to the City and County of San Francisco for compliance with Public Works Code Article 2.4. The guide requires at least $25,000 security and describes pavement maintenance for three years after backfill/restoration; the published form states $25,000.

Who needs it
The permit holder/contractor whose company and state contractor-license information must appear as principal. The General Excavation path concerns an individual property's utility connection; utility-company facilities or government-contract work follow the separate Utility Excavation path described by Public Works.
Who it protects
The bond is distinct from liability insurance, business tax registration and the excavation permit. Its three-year restoration period is not three years from purchase. The form's surety-termination clause also requires 30 days' written notice and conditions termination on pavement restoration being more than three years ago.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Sidewalk-only DBI work still needs the right permit

For utility work tied to a Department of Building Inspection plumbing/electrical permit, Public Works still calls for General Excavation permission to restore the sidewalk—not a Voluntary Sidewalk Repair or Street Space permit.

The guide says that if this work stays entirely in the sidewalk without disturbing curb or roadway, a Class A/applicable-specialty license and $25,000 bond on file are not required, though preferred. Do not turn that limited exception into an exemption for ordinary roadway trenching or from the permit itself. Confirm the actual scope and accepted security request.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Identify General versus Utility Excavation and the exact sidewalk/curb/roadway limits.
  2. Have the work drawing, utility authorization or applicable DBI permit context.
  3. Confirm the principal's company/license information and City and County recipient.
  4. Use the requested sum/form, dates and authorized execution with the surety's notarial acknowledgment.

Questions about this bond

Does the restoration period begin when I buy the bond?

No. The guide measures maintenance after backfill/restoration, and the form measures three years after pavement restoration. Its conditional notice clause is separate; do not assume automatic cancellation.

Is every sidewalk utility job exempt from the bond?

No. The reviewed exception is limited to the described DBI-related work entirely within the sidewalk, without curb or roadway disturbance. The General Excavation permit still applies.
