How a fidelity bond works

Fidelity protection responds to covered dishonest acts. The form identifies whose money or property is protected, the covered persons, and the applicable limits.

What this bond does

An ERISA fidelity bond protects a benefit plan against covered losses from fraud or dishonesty by people handling its funds or other property.

Who needs it
Employers and plan administrators arranging bonding for people who handle an ERISA-covered plan's assets, unless an exemption applies.
Who is protected
The plan is the insured party. This protection does not replace fiduciary liability insurance or cover ordinary business liability.

Choose from 2 options

Each option is a separate record. Where a term, bond amount, premium, or E&O limit is known, it is listed; match it to what your requirement asks for.

The coverage amount describes a limit of protection, not the price. Match the requested protection and covered persons to the actual fidelity form. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Set the amount before choosing the term

Ask your plan adviser to determine the required bond amount from the funds handled and the plan's circumstances. Neither term choice on this page specifies a coverage amount; confirm the requested amount in RLI's application.

ERISA bonding rules are federal. The Alabama label does not establish a separate state requirement. Choosing three years does not itself increase the amount or settle whether an exemption applies.

Questions about this bond

Does the bond protect the employer or the plan?

The plan must be named or otherwise specifically identified as an insured party. The protection concerns covered fraud or dishonesty affecting its assets.

Can fiduciary liability insurance replace this bond?

No. Fiduciary liability insurance concerns breaches of fiduciary responsibilities and does not satisfy ERISA's fidelity bonding requirement.

What amount should I select?

Use the amount determined for your plan and its handling activities. The one-year and three-year labels describe duration, not coverage limits.

What happens after Purchase Now?

RLI's application opens in a new tab. Confirm the plan, amount and dates there. After issuance, check the document and retain it with the plan's records.
