New York, NY — Building Operations More Than One Location Liability Bond

NYC DOT publishes a $25,000 permit bond specifically for building-operations permits at more than one location. Confirm that DOT has classified your work in that category before applying through RLI; its multiple-location street-opening forms are different.

What this bond does

Provide the City's permit-compliance security for the principal's approved building operations at multiple locations. The official form is expressly limited to building-operations permits and names the City acting through its Department of Transportation.

Who needs it
A permittee arranging DOT building-operations work at more than one City location, such as permitted use of streets or sidewalks for building-related operations. Confirm the legal principal, sites, work classifications, and coverage year.
Who it protects
The form addresses permitted work, protection and restoration of City property, deficient work, City costs, and permit compliance. “Liability Bond” does not make this a commercial general liability insurance policy or a guarantee of the whole building project.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Choose the building-operations category

DOT's current general-conditions page separates street/sidewalk-opening bond templates from the “More Than One Location – Building Operations Permits Only” form. The latter states a $25,000 penal sum.

Do not choose it solely because you have multiple addresses. The published two-to-fifty-location opening form states $50,000 and is a different category. Have DOT identify the accepted form for the actual activities.

Calendar coverage does not end earlier-work obligations

The building-operations form describes calendar-year coverage and extensions by continuation certificates executed by the principal and surety. Its annual periods are not proof of automatic renewal or release of the work guarantee.

The form also preserves obligations for permits issued or work performed before effective cancellation and references maintenance guarantees extending beyond completion. Confirm the work's protected-street status and required coverage rather than assuming all liability ends at year-end.

Complete the bond and permit steps separately

Obtain DOT's principal, category, amount, coverage-year, signature, acknowledgment, and surety-attachment instructions. Once matched, continue through the existing RLI application and submit the executed bond as DOT directs.

DOT separately requires permit review and insurance documents. Obtain the applicable permits and work conditions before occupying the street or sidewalk; a bond does not grant permission to place equipment, materials, or structures there.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Confirm DOT building-operations classification and more-than-one-location scope.
  2. Identify the legal permittee, sites, permit work and requested calendar coverage.
  3. Use the accepted $25,000 building-operations-only wording and required execution attachments.
  4. Arrange separate insurance, permit submission and any continuation or post-work maintenance instructions.

Questions about this bond

Is this the two-to-fifty-location street-opening bond?

No. DOT separately publishes a $25,000 more-than-one-location building-operations form and a $50,000 two-to-fifty-location opening form. Confirm the work category before ordering.

Does the word liability mean this replaces my insurance?

No. DOT's general conditions separately require insurance. This is a surety permit bond with its own City-protection and compliance obligations.

Does cancellation erase obligations for prior permits?

The form says cancellation is not effective for permits issued or work performed before its effective cancellation date. Work-guarantee obligations can continue; obtain the required continuation and completion instructions.
