Watertown, MA — Right Of Way Bond

Watertown, Massachusetts requires the contractor performing the work—not the property owner—to apply for its public-works permit. The City asks for a $10,000 bond valid for two years at application, separate from the permit's usual 30-day work window.

What this bond does

City of Watertown, Massachusetts public-works security for the performing contractor's approved right-of-way activity.

Who needs it
The performing contractor, including work involving driveway/apron paving, utility installation or equipment crossing the sidewalk.
Who it protects
The accepted City instrument addresses its stated public-way obligations. The bond is separate from liability insurance and does not itself authorize driveway work or occupation of the sidewalk.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

A private driveway can still involve the public way

The City's permit guidance includes new or existing driveway and parking-lot paving, utilities, curbing, resurfacing and equipment crossing a sidewalk or apron. The performing contractor must apply; the property owner cannot substitute as applicant merely because the work serves that property.

The FAQ says dumpsters and storage PODS must be placed in the driveway without overhanging the sidewalk, while a permit and security are still required because delivery and removal cross the right-of-way. Do not interpret a crossing permit as permission to leave the container in the street. Confirm the actual placement and access route with DPW.

Separate the two-year bond requirement from the permit

Watertown's guidance requires presentation of a $10,000 bond valid for two years when applying, alongside separate insurance. Purchase Now opens Propeller; the option displays no fixed amount or term. Confirm that the issued form, contractor principal, City recipient, amount and dates meet that City requirement rather than assuming the offer already specifies two years.

The permit is normally valid for 30 days from issuance unless it states a shorter or longer period. Arrange bond execution and City-accepted filing and obtain the actual DPW permit; buying security does not approve a driveway plan or extend the work window.

The City says it is a Dig Safe member and asks for the confirmation number. Follow the actual utility and inspection requirements, including advance curb/concrete inspection before setting or pouring. Obtain the City's maintenance and bond-release directions; neither the 30-day permit nor a completed delivery establishes release.
