Yakima, WA — Street Excavation Bond

Yakima's excavation process calls for at least $10,000 contractor security, one bond per job site, using the city's two-year Excavation Bond template. The work permit's 30-day construction period is separate from the post-work warranty and actual security release.

What this bond does

Helps a Yakima contractor prepare job-site excavation security, the signed permit and start-work inspection before construction.

Who needs it
Licensed contractors performing excavation, street cuts, utility or other covered work in Yakima public ROW or easements.
Who it protects
The city template addresses losses/injuries from public-place work, completion of approved improvements, indemnity/defense of Yakima, restoration and permit/franchise compliance.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Prepare the job-specific excavation submission

The current Engineering page requires one contractor bond per job site with at least $10,000 security. Its July 2026 application packet provides the two-year template, hold-harmless language and notarized execution; confirm the actual required sum and dates with Engineering.

Submit the signed application, detailed excavation site plan/dimensions, schedule, traffic-control plan and separate contractor insurance. Identify the state-licensed contractor and required city business licensing. Private construction of public ROW infrastructure may also need an ENG permit.

Obtain the signed permit and start-work approval

Use the existing Propeller application with the city's accepted excavation form, then submit the executed document through Engineering's instructed route. Surety issuance does not replace the permit review.

The city sends the approved permit to the contractor, requires it to be signed/returned and kept onsite, and requires portal scheduling of the Start-Work Inspection in advance. Work cannot start until that inspection is approved. Confirm Engineering's required lead time and schedule the other project inspections through the portal.

Track permit extensions and the warranty separately

The city describes a 30-day permit with written extension requests where more construction time is needed. It separately keeps the excavation permit open for two years after completion for pavement/sidewalk settlement or breakage repair obligations.

The bond template is labeled two-year security and requires city written permission for release. Confirm the actual bond dates and the city's final/warranty acceptance rather than assuming a 30-day permit, last workday or two years from purchase automatically ends security.

Questions about this bond

Can one bond automatically cover all my Yakima jobs?

The current Engineering page says one excavation bond is required per job site. Confirm the project and city-accepted instrument before ordering.

Is the 30-day permit the bond term?

No. The packet identifies two-year security, the construction permit has a separate 30-day period/extensions, and the city describes a two-year post-completion repair obligation.

Can I start once the bond is issued?

No. Obtain the permit, sign/return it and get the scheduled Start-Work Inspection approved before beginning work.

Does the last inspection automatically release security?

Do not assume so. The template requires written city permission for release; confirm the warranty and actual bond dates with Engineering.
