Content Delivery Network Insurance

Your edge hardware can sit at many sites while a single cache or routing change affects several customers. Network protection should fit the owned or leased interests and grouped service demands, with traffic logs, hosted-content rights, and peering outages reviewed separately from equipment breakdown.

Map actual edge ownership and sites, peering dependencies, delivery or mitigation promises and the traffic or credentials you handle.

Industry overview

You cache and route digital content through distributed edge locations to improve delivery speed. A regional routing or cache error can cause significant interruption even when no hardware is physically damaged.

The Southern Agency can review your network footprint and edge operations to help you select appropriate insurance. We can discuss E&O for routing claims alongside cyber and equipment coverage for incidents that cross your distributed infrastructure.

Risks worth discussing

Delivery integrity

Stale or misrouted content can disrupt an application. Several clients affected by one configuration error may share a related-claim limit.

Attacks and data

A volumetric attack can degrade service. Privacy responsibilities depend on what traffic, logs, and credentials the network actually handles.

Distributed sites and content

Edge equipment may be owned or leased at many sites. Hosted-content/IP complaints and upstream outages need specific terms.

Situations to think through

These hypothetical examples are not agency claim results. Whether a loss is covered depends on the facts, policy terms, and applicable exclusions.

  1. Hypothetical: Attack overwhelms an edge region

A customer alleges failed mitigation caused missed sales. Tech E&O may address a covered service claim; contractual credits and a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery are not automatically paid.

  2. Hypothetical: Stale cache breaks an application

A cache rule could serve outdated application files across an edge region, leading several customers to claim lost transactions. Applicable technology E&O may address covered damages from accepted delivery services. Review related-claim wording, shared limits and actual losses; one configuration error does not promise separate full limits or every customer's projected revenue.

  3. Hypothetical: Configuration exposes traffic

A routing/security error exposes information the CDN handles. Cyber may address covered response/liability based on actual data and duties; routing alone does not establish one universal notification obligation.

Questions to raise

  • Do edge schedules and transit dependencies reflect the real footprint?
  • Are mitigation and content-related allegations included or excluded?

Contract terms to check

  • Compare latency, availability, and mitigation promises with contractual exclusions.
  • Review content-handling obligations and applicable media/IP terms rather than assuming all distributed material is covered.

What the agent conversation looks like

Start with the work you do and the questions your current policies leave unanswered. Carrier options depend on your location, risk, and underwriting. Explore our approach.

Questions owners ask

Does routing data automatically create breach duties?

No universal rule follows. Data access, incident facts, and applicable law need assessment.

Is a cache error equipment breakdown?

Usually it needs service/software analysis rather than assuming physical failure. The purchased definitions govern.

Are edge servers covered everywhere?

Only if locations, ownership interests, and territorial terms fit.

Will cyber pay a peering outage?

Only if relevant event/dependency and interruption terms apply; ordinary network downtime may not qualify.

Talk through your content delivery network coverage

Bring your questions, current policies, and relevant contracts. An agent can review coverage terms, exclusions, and the information carriers ask for, then explain the options available to you.
