What this bond does

The statutory certified-server bond provides security for people wrongfully injured by failures in service-of-process duties. It is one part of certification, not authority to serve documents by itself.

Who needs it
Individual Florida process servers matching their bond to the certification or appointment they seek. Circuit-certified servers and sheriff-appointed servers have different appointment routes.
Who it protects
Section48.29 protects people wrongfully injured by malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty or incompetence connected with service duties. The statute calls for an annually renewable $5,000 bond for certified servers.

Your bond option

This is the option on record for this bond.

The bond amount describes the limit of the bond obligation, not the price. A listed amount does not establish what the requesting party requires. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Start with the appointing authority

Under Section48.27, chief judges may keep approved lists of certified process servers, with annual recertification and reappointment. Listing authorizes specified service within the circuit where the server is certified, not a statewide appointment.

The law also preserves other routes, including sheriff appointments. Use the current request from your actual appointing authority for the accepted form, recipient and dates instead of treating every Florida appointment as identical.

Apply, then complete certification

Purchase Now opens RLI in a new tab. Have your individual legal name, circuit or county, appointment/application reference, required bond sum and dates ready.

After issuance, compare the bond with the appointing authority’s instructions and provide it with the remaining certification or renewal documents. The state-named catalog page and bond purchase do not put you on a circuit’s approved list.

Sources

Have these ready

  1. Individual server name and appointing circuit, county or sheriff.
  2. Current bond form/request and certification or appointment reference.
  3. Required sum and effective dates, plus current appointment expiration for renewal.

Questions about this bond

Does one purchase authorize service throughout Florida?

No. Section48.27 describes certification and authorized service within the circuit where the server is certified. A bond does not replace the appointment or expand its scope.

Do sheriff appointments follow exactly the same checklist?

Do not assume so. Section48.27 preserves sheriff appointment routes. Match the bond to the current instructions for your actual appointment.

What should I prepare for renewal?

Have the current appointment record, expiration date and appointing authority’s renewal instructions. The certified-server statute calls for annual bond renewal, and circuit certification/reappointment is also annual.
