How a fidelity bond works

Fidelity protection responds to covered dishonest acts. The form identifies whose money or property is protected, the covered persons, and the applicable limits.

What this bond does

ERISA fidelity protection covers defined fraud or dishonesty losses affecting plan funds or property handled by covered people.

Who needs it
Plan sponsors and administrators responsible for bonding arrangements for ERISA-covered asset handlers, unless an exemption applies.
Who is protected
The employee benefit plan is insured. The bond does not replace fiduciary liability insurance or protect the employer against ordinary business liability.

Choose from 2 options

Each option is a separate record. Where a term, bond amount, premium, or E&O limit is known, it is listed; match it to what your requirement asks for.

The coverage amount describes a limit of protection, not the price. Match the requested protection and covered persons to the actual fidelity form. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Review handling and the required amount

Discuss the plan's funds-handled information and the people with control over those assets with your adviser. Handling can include authority to transfer funds or direct disbursements.

Federal ERISA rules determine the requirement; the Iowa association creates no separate state rule. The 36-month and 12-month RLI choices state duration without an amount. Confirm the sum and plan identity in the selected application.

Questions about this bond

Does control over transfers count as handling?

It can. The federal guide considers authority over plan property, not only physical possession of money.

Does three years automatically increase protection?

It extends the stated period; it does not itself increase the amount. Check the required amount separately.

Can fiduciary liability insurance replace fidelity bonding?

No. The Department of Labor distinguishes the two and says fiduciary liability insurance does not satisfy the bonding requirement.

Where do I complete the application?

Purchase Now opens RLI in a new tab. After completing its process and receiving an issued bond, check and retain the document.
