How a fidelity bond works

Fidelity protection responds to covered dishonest acts. The form identifies whose money or property is protected, the covered persons, and the applicable limits.

What this bond does

The bond protects plan funds or other property against covered fraud or dishonesty by people handling those assets.

Who needs it
Employers and administrators arranging bonding for ERISA-covered plan asset handlers, subject to exemptions.
Who is protected
The employee benefit plan is insured. The bond does not replace fiduciary liability insurance or ordinary business liability protection.

Choose from 2 options

Each option is a separate record. Where a term, bond amount, premium, or E&O limit is known, it is listed; match it to what your requirement asks for.

The coverage amount describes a limit of protection, not the price. Match the requested protection and covered persons to the actual fidelity form. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Separate the amount from the protection period

Have your adviser establish the amount from the funds handled and the plan's circumstances. The 12-month and 36-month RLI choices have no stated amount here.

Federal ERISA rules determine the requirement. The Minnesota association does not create a separate state rule. Confirm the insured plan and effective dates in the selected application.

Questions about this bond

Who must be identified as insured?

The plan must be named or otherwise specifically identified as an insured party.

Does three years automatically mean enough protection?

The term alone does not determine adequacy. Check the amount and coverage as the plan's circumstances change.

Can fiduciary liability insurance satisfy bonding?

No. It addresses fiduciary duties and does not satisfy the ERISA fidelity bonding requirement.
