How a fidelity bond works

Fidelity protection responds to covered dishonest acts. The form identifies whose money or property is protected, the covered persons, and the applicable limits.

What this bond does

The bond protects employee benefit plan assets against covered fraud or dishonesty by people handling plan funds or property.

Who needs it
Employers and plan administrators arranging bonding for ERISA-covered asset handlers, subject to exemptions.
Who is protected
The plan is the insured party. Fidelity bonding does not replace fiduciary liability insurance or general business liability protection.

Choose from 2 options

Each option is a separate record. Where a term, bond amount, premium, or E&O limit is known, it is listed; match it to what your requirement asks for.

The coverage amount describes a limit of protection, not the price. Match the requested protection and covered persons to the actual fidelity form. The premium is what you pay and must be confirmed for the actual option. An E&O limit, where listed, is separate errors and omissions insurance.

Identify handlers before applying

Include people with power to direct transfers or disbursements when reviewing the plan's handlers with your adviser. Outside service providers can also need bonding, unless an exemption applies.

Determine the amount under the federal ERISA framework. Nebraska's catalog label does not establish a separate state rule. The 12-month and 36-month choices list no amount here; verify the sum in the selected application.

Questions about this bond

Does handling mean physical possession of money?

Control over plan property, including transfer authority, can also create a bonding obligation.

Is the longer term a higher amount?

No. Choose the duration separately from the amount required for your plan.

Can fiduciary liability insurance satisfy bonding?

No. Fiduciary liability insurance concerns breaches of fiduciary responsibilities and does not satisfy ERISA fidelity bonding.
